Video Alert: The Man Who Walked Around the World
And went on to create one of the world's best-selling whiskeys
Not only is this whiskey one of the most iconic brands in the world but so is the bottled it is served in … a square.
And that’s on purpose.
You see back in 1860, bottles of whiskey were being shipped throughout Scotland in railroad cars. But the rough and tough rumble motion created from the tracks meant that bottles would often break.
After reaching their final destination … when the wooden boxes were opened, it was smashed glass everywhere.
But some men are more genius than others. And so it was with Alexander Walker who was running the family owned business.
To help ensure their brand of whiskey arrived with little breakage, Alexander decided to use square bottles instead of the traditional round ones. And in fact according to geometry experts at Structural Guide, Alexander was quite right.
Square cubes are 125% stronger than cylinders.
Not only did Johnnie Walker whiskey (or whisky as it is pronounced in Scotland) arrive mostly intact, it became one of the country’s most favored brands. And from there, one that is now served around the world.
And it all started when the young Scottish lad named Johnnie started blending whisky in a grocery shop.
I offer you Dear Reader, this six-minute video that tells the story of Johnnie Walker and how he created a whiskey empire now valued at $15 billion per year.
